My name is Dr. SWILUA. (Pronounced "Swill-oo-ah") That's short for "She Who Is Like Unto Aphrodite." It's my official title, thanks.

Middle of the Course Survey!

We're right in the middle of the semester, so it's time for a little eval.

1) What was your favorite thing we've done so far this semester?

2) What would you like to spend more time on?

You get homework points for answering those questions. Leave a comment to get it. If you want to stay anonymous that's fine. Just say your comment is from anonymous. Then later email me for the points.

  1. 1) I think that "bad narrative" thing was really fun to do. It taught me things to avoid when writing my personal narrative, and it was just fun to go way over the top, and write a crappy paper. Does it get any better? Does it GET any better? I submit that it does not.

    2) I feel like it would be beneficial if we spent more time on the research paper, since it's our biggest paper. Maybe a day or two to help with all the wikipedia translation and stuff. Really though, we're giving everything a good amount of time. I feel confident about this class!

  2. 1. My favorite thing was the E-bay paper! I had a lot of fun writing it. I think writing a paper like the E-bay one is applicable to what we would be doing in real life. Persuading people.

    2. I would like to work more on the Wikipedia paper. I feel like I am still confused on format and such and would like to learn more about the technical details.

  3. 1. I really have liked working on the Ebay paper. Not only is it challenging my writing and persuasion skills, it's fun to see how I can attempt to sell something totally worthless. I also like the Personal Narrative, because it lets me be nostalgic (which I am a LOT).

    2. Honestly, I feel like we should spend more time on the research Wiki article we're required to do. That's the hardest paper we have of the six we've been assigned, and I'm still struggling with it immensely.

  4. 1. I enjoyed writing the bad narrative the most. It was deliberately writing something really awful, and was an illuminating process for my own writing.

    2. I still don't know what the ebay paper is meant to say, or what format it is meant to take?

  5. 1) The bad narrative was a lot of fun to write, and it really helped me recognize mistakes in my personal narrative. The eBay paper is a great opportunity to be creative.

    2) I could use a little more time for the wikipedia paper, and a little more direction on the format and style of the eBay paper would be appreciated.

  6. 1) I like the ebay paper, I not only find the idea appealing to try to persuade someone to buy something of no worth, but to possibly get money out of it too.

    2) I would like to spend a little more time doing the paper reviews, I feel like we don't do those very efficiently and I want to have as much feedback as possible.

  7. 1. I would say that I enjoyed the Ebay paper the most. I just thought it was fun to write. This assignment allowed me to be creative in trying to persuade people to buy something that is completely worthless.

    2. I would like to spend more time on the Wikipedia paper. This is because it is the biggest assignment we have and requires much more time than the other assignments.

  8. 1 - The ebay paper has been by far the most awesome part of this class and I want to make $10,000.

2 - Everyone is talking about the wiki paper, but I'm stuggling mostly with the Personal Narrative because I've never written anything like it and my high school expereince involved lots of research papers. Being objective or writing a funny ebay page is a lot easier than invoking serious emotional responses from a story about myself...

  9. 1. I really liked the first day of class assignment with asking for someone's piece of hair and number. I also liked the bad narrative paper it was fun.

    2. I think we should spend more time on the peer review days they really help me see how other people do their papers and I would like to get more feedback on my papers.

  10. 1. I really, really loved the personal narrative. I also like the tips you give us, the guidelines that structure our papers better.

    2. I could use some guidance on publishing on wikipedia. Some extra focus on any part of that research paper would be greatly appreciated by me at least. Especially since its our biggest one.

  11. 1. My favorite thing we've done was the writing activity in class where we had to write about a situation first describing the sensory things, and then describing the situation. It was very fun.

    2. I would like some more direction as to where we're supposed to be as far as the readings at this point. I've been ignoring those ever since we started the papers.

  12. 1. Agreed. With all of them, but especially the sensory activity in class. That was when I expanded myself the most in terms of writing style. I've never been so particular about what I smelled, felt, saw, tasted, or heard at one particular moment. It was neat.

    2. We already were given the most time to spend on the Wiki paper, but that one has been the hardest for me, and it would have been beneficial to just have more research time.

  13. 1. The bad narrative was a lot of fun. I enjoy writing fun, "out there" papers where the first thing that comes to my mind really is appropriate to write down.... usually.

    2. The Wiki paper. Seemed to kind of fly by, and yet it's the most important paper in the class.

  14. Sorry, I know this is really late, but I just barely saw this while scrolling down to see the calender.
    1. I really like the ebay paper. It is hilarious that people actually buy this garbage, and we might make some money off of it.
    2. I agree with everyone's comments about the wiki paper. Also, I would like some more feedback on rough drafts because we cannot fit in very many ICPP's, and that is the only other way we can get your feedback on papers.

  15. My Favorite thing so far this semester has been the wiki paper. I really like researching things I'm interested in. I really hope we get more time to discuss how to make arguments, I have never been good at persuasive writing (hence my ebay paper sucks big time).

  16. 1-I had a lot of fun doing the bad narrative. It was fun doing the opposite of what your usually asked to do. I really enjoyed that.
2-I also think we could have spent a little more time on the wiki paper just because its the longest and worth the more points.

  17. 1) I had a great time in this class. I thought the assignments were different and fun. I enjoyed learning new writing techniques and how to become a better writer. I loved the scavenger hunts. Also, I though peer reviews were way helpful. They always seemed to catch my errors and it helped my writing.

    2) I Definitely could have spent more time on the Wiki Paper. It was the most time consuming and I would have got more sleep if I had not waited until the end to start it :)
