If you're in BYU Writing 150H sections 122, 126, or 129 you're in the right place.

My name is Dr. SWILUA. (Pronounced "Swill-oo-ah") That's short for "She Who Is Like Unto Aphrodite." It's my official title, thanks.

I talked about this Grammar Rant in one of my classes today and promised a link.

It's about spelling, but if you find it interesting, you can click on the "grammar rants" label and get more of my spouting. Some of it might even be useful.

  1. I should get extra credit from posting on this post... not only am I the first post... (thinking)... I guess that is the only reason to deserve extra credit in this case as this jumble of words probably deserves no merit for any other reason....

  2. Yup posting too. It's way late, but that's OK!
I am still going through the crazy "can you see this jumbled mess that's supposed to be a word" pop-up to do it.

  4. I read the post about "y'all". I'm from Texas, so I use that word all the time. I'm glad you've come around to accepting Texas dialogue!

  5. In second grade we had spelling contests every week. I always won. I LOVED spelling, and I loved the bragging rights that came along with being better at it than any of my friends (or not friends)
Thing is, spelling comes really naturally when you read all the time, and I have always been somewhat obsessed with reading ever since I was two years old. I used to complain to my mother that I'd already read all the books in our house and that there was nothing good left to read (not actually true)
So my rant with spelling? Get your kids to love reading, and then they will not only be able to spell much more naturally, but they won't be that irritating child who reads like this: "A-and... he went up in- inTO his ch... chaaaammmmmb... chaaaamber, over the... the gate and.. and we- wep... wept. And th-th-thus, he said..." You get the point. Also, spellings like "cuz" and "tho" might make more sense when you think about how we say it, but doesn't "though" just look better? Also cuz is just wrong for all sorts of reasons, not the least of which being that it's completely removing that whole "be" prefix.

  6. Hmmm... knowing how language changed from middle english to modern english would change the way you understood the scriptures. Kind of a interesting thought.
